Dear Carmel College Community,
Last weekend was Pentecost. This year, I had a new take on the story of the Apostles speaking in different languages and people from all over understanding them. It occurred to me that all too often in our lives, when we have disagreements or when someone doesn’t understand what we are saying that it can seem like we are speaking a different language. Maybe we are misunderstood at work, or we failed to make clear who was getting the milk on the way home – whatever the situation, clear communication is critical in both preventing and solving problems.
This is nowhere more apparent than in the lives of our young people. Teenagers accuse others of misunderstanding them just as frequently as they too misunderstand others. Many of the issues we manage at school come about when people appear to be ‘speaking different languages’. There is an opportunity in this season of Pentecost to seek the patience of the Holy Spirit and look to listen with the heart. To try and genuinely understand the other’s view point and feelings before considering a response. Then maybe we too can be amazed because each hears their own language being spoken.
School Improvement Review
This week, we welcomed four external reviewers who interviewed staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders. They also reviewed data and college practices to provide commendations and recommendations based on the School Improvement Tool. The full report will come to us in due course and will help guide our priorities for development.
Thank you to all parents, students and staff who assisted with the review.
BCE Excellence Awards
Please join in congratulating Mr Trevor Tollis, Ms Jacqui Braddon and Ms Desiree Anderson, who have been nominated for BCE Excellence Awards. We also offer special congratulations to Ms Anderson who has progressed through to be selected as a finalist in the category of Excellence as an Early Career Teacher.
Careers Expo
Congratulations and thank you to the large team of people that put together the Careers Expo last night. It was pleasing to see so many students and parents engaged in conversations about their future learning.
Have a wonderful fortnight.
God bless.
Mr Stephen Adair
Principal
At Carmel College, we are deeply committed to fostering a learning environment built on clarity, consistency, and accountability. These values are not only essential for our students’ success but also for the smooth operation of our College community. Achieving this vision is a shared responsibility—and your role as parents and carers is pivotal.
We are grateful for the many ways you already support your child’s education. To further strengthen our partnership and ensure our processes remain transparent and effective, we kindly ask for your continued support in the following areas:
Student Absences: Please notify the College promptly via BCE Connect or the Parent Portal whenever your child is absent. This helps us maintain accurate attendance records and ensures student safety.
Contact Information Updates: If your phone number, email address, or home address changes, please update your details through the Parent Portal. This ensures we can reach you quickly in case of emergencies or important updates.
Changes in Family Circumstances: If any changes in parenting arrangements or significant family events may impact your child’s learning or wellbeing, we encourage you to inform the College. This allows us to provide the appropriate support and care.
Assessment Support: Encourage your child to follow the College’s guidelines for requesting extensions on assessments. Supporting them in meeting deadlines and communicating proactively helps build responsibility and resilience.
By working together, we can ensure that our processes remain clear, accountable, and student-focused. Your engagement not only supports your child’s success but also strengthens the entire Carmel College community.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and commitment.
God bless,
Mr Reuben Chalmers

Celebrating Faith and Service: Champagnat House Mass
Last week, the Carmel College community gathered to celebrate the Champagnat House Mass, honouring the legacy and spirit of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, founder of the Marist Brothers and patron of Champagnat House.
This special Mass was a time to reflect on the values that shaped Marcellin’s mission — humility, simplicity, presence, family spirit, and love of work. Guided by the Gospel message of unity and service, we were reminded of Marcellin’s unwavering commitment to young people, particularly those on the margins, and his deep trust in God’s guidance.
Students and staff from Champagnat House participated in the Mass with reverence and care, sharing prayers and reflections that connected the life of Saint Marcellin with the challenges and opportunities we face in our own lives today.
In the Gospel Reflection, we were invited to ask ourselves: How can I live like Marcellin? How can I be a person of courage, truth, and compassion in my school, home, and wider world? These are the kinds of questions that help us grow not just in faith, but also in character and leadership.
We thank Fr Krupa for celebrating the Eucharist with us, and the Champagnat House staff and students for their thoughtful preparation and wholehearted participation. May we continue to walk in the footsteps of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, bringing hope, unity, and love to all those around us.
Saint Marcellin Champagnat, pray for us.

The Carmel Chop: Courage, Compassion, and Community
One of the most heartwarming traditions at Carmel College is the annual Carmel Chop — where our courageous Year 12 students step forward to cut or shave their hair in support of cancer research and care, raising funds for the Mater Foundation’s Chicks in Pink.
This year’s event, taking place during assembly on Monday 4 August, is shaping up to be something truly special. Already, our seniors have shown incredible commitment and unity, rallying together to meet and exceed their fundraising goals. Their efforts are not just about dollars raised — they are about standing in solidarity with those affected by cancer, and being a force for good in our world.
To help make this event a success, we are calling on any volunteer hairdressers in our wider Carmel community who may be able to assist on the day. If you or someone you know is willing to donate a little time and talent to support our students, we would love to hear from you.
Please contact the College Office or email erin.hardy@bne.catholic.edu.au if you’re able to assist.
Together, let’s continue to show what the Carmel community can achieve when we lead with heart. Donations can be made through this link: 2025 Carmel Chop.
Rosies Winter Donation Drive – Help Us Fill the Baskets!
As part of our ongoing commitment to service, the Year 9 and 10 Game Changers, alongside the Year 12 Religion and Ethics classes, are leading a Winter Donation Drive in support of Rosies – Friends on the Street.
Most Friday evenings, our Carmel College student volunteers head out with Rosies to serve those experiencing homelessness in our local area. This term, we hope to bring along a basket full of essential donations each week to help meet the growing need during the colder months.
We’re asking each year level to contribute a specific type of item:
- Year 7 & 8 – Hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, razors, combs)
- Year 9 & 10 – Non-perishable food (favourites are instant noodles, cup-a- soups)
- Year 11 & 12 – Warm winter items (beanies, socks, gloves, scarves, blankets)
Donations can be dropped off in the baskets near Student Reception at any time during the school day. Thank you for supporting this meaningful outreach—your contributions help bring dignity, warmth, and kindness to others.
Shoe Drive – House Competition Heats Up!
The shoe drive is also a House challenge, and at this stage, Champagnat House is well ahead! We're hoping to see a big push from Avila, Polding, Romero, and MacKillop in the coming weeks to close the gap.
Donations can be placed in the House bins outside my office. Let’s work together to make a real difference—and bring a little friendly House spirit to the cause!
Mrs Erin Hardy
Assistant Principal-Religious Education
At Full School Assembly on Monday morning, I explained our updated Uniform and Presentation Rectification Process. It will continue to focus on rewarding students with House Points for making positive behaviour choices and aligns with the Clear Accountable Processes component of our Explicit Improvement Agenda. This is in line with the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) framework that underpins our behaviour management process at the College. It will also enable PC Teachers and House Leaders to better support students needing assistance with their uniform and presentation.
Rectification process:
The steps below outline the consequences if a student is not adhering to our College uniform and presentation expectations:
Please remember to consult the Carmel College Look Book, to ensure your son or daughter is adhering to uniform and presentation requirements.
To ensure our Home School Partnerships remain strong, please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions or suggestions about this updated process.
Wishing you all a productive end to the term,
Mr Liam Lunney
Student Wellbeing Leader
Important Notice for Students on S8 Medications
We would like to remind all students and parents that any student prescribed cut S8 medications must have their medicine in a Webster-pak. Medication that is not sealed this way cannot be administered by staff at the college. For any college camps, all S8 medication must be in a webster pack. This policy ensures the safe and accurate administration of medications.
To assist families in finding a pharmacy that offers Webster-pak services, we recommend using webster care pharmacy finder. By entering your postcode and setting a search radius, you will receive a list of pharmacies that provide this packaging. This tool is designed to make the process easier and more convenient for everyone involved.
We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this important policy to ensure the safety and well-being of all our students. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact stephanie.mcginty@carmelcollege.qld.edu.au.

The Learning Dashboard – Semester One Reports
Our Semester One Reports are underway at the time of writing and we will be publishing these on Friday 27 June. This round of reporting precedes our final evening of Student-Parent-Teacher conferences on Tuesday 15 July. I encourage all parents and caregivers to talk with your children about their academic results and their Consistent Committed Learner Qualities. These reports are one piece of data that can help you and your children determine goals for Term 3 and identify areas of strength and barriers to learning. Our PC teachers will be ready to go in Term 3 to discuss, reflect, set goals and celebrate achievements in our PC Learn conversations.
As a reminder, parents and carers should be accessing ‘The Learning Dashboard’ rather than ‘Academic Reports’ as the Academic Reports section of our portal is where we have archived reports on the previous system.
Carmel College Assessment Policy
Over the last few weeks, I’ve met with numerous students and families to discuss all things Learning and Teaching in Year 10 – 12. It’s always wonderful to see families prioritising learning in our community and I appreciate the time and patience you’ve all offered me in this critical space. At Carmel we have explicit assessment procedures and guidelines for all of our learners. Our assessment policy outlines our philosophy around learning, teaching and assessing but also explains steps towards accessing special provisions for tasks, appropriate documentation needed to evidence the absence and next steps to catch-up on assessment. You can find this document on the parent portal or below:

Year 10 Subject Expo and SET Planning
Thank you to all Parents and Students for your attendance and engagement with our recent Subject and Careers Expo. It was great to have so many parents in attendance to learn about the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system and how we can individualise pathways for Carmel Students in Year 11 & 12.
You may be wondering what comes next and how students will now select their subjects for Year 11. I will be working closely with the 10s around the process of subject selection and providing every opportunity for them to seek knowledge and understanding around our suite of senior subjects and pathways. As parents, you will receive communication about the timelines of SET Planning and subject selection from our Pathways Leader Katie Coggins.
In Year 10, students will work with Carmel to design their own Senior Education and Training (SET) plan, selecting from a range of subjects or vocational pathways that were showcased last Tuesday. This process relies on parents and students to work with us to ensure we are setting achievable and motivating goals for your learners senior education journey. More information can be found here:
As a parent or carer, there are many ways you can join this conversation so that come SET Planning time, you and your learner are well equipped to navigate these important decisions and discussions.
- Discuss the upcoming semester one report to determine strengths of your learner.
- Engage with our pathways hub to access up to date information, calendar items and short activities that will assist your learner in deciding their path forward. https://carmelcollegepathways.com/
- Visit QTAC to learn when specific institutions are hosting their University Open days.
- Engage in conversation with your learner to determine their strengths, passions and skills and encourage them to discover what career and pathway options might allow them to thrive with these things in mind. QUT and UQ have great supporting resources to assist you in having these conversations.
Year 11 & 12 Term Two Wrap-Up

I recently sent out the QCAA published External Exam Timetable to all Year 12 parents, caregivers and students. As mentioned in that communication, a Carmel version with location and timing of exams will be published during Term 3. If you have not been able to access this information please follow the link below:
Term 3 will provide opportunities for our Year 12s to meet with their PC teachers for a second round of academic mentoring that will capture IA2s and 3s. Our Pathways Team will also be working with our Year 12s to discuss next steps post schooling and ensure that students have all of the tools to equip them for success beyond Carmel.
This will also see the first round of academic mentoring for our Year 11 students who will be reflecting with PC teachers on their Unit 1 results and steps to keep the momentum going. Year 11s have been incredibly reflective, and I’ve seen a number of subject changes come through that will support continued Year 11 success on their Senior Pathways. Well done, Year 11!
As always, we are available to answer any questions. Well done to all of our Senior Students for your hard work and commitment to learning across Term Two!
Ms Cher Williams
Assistant Principal Learning & Teaching Years 10-12
Titration Competition 2025
Chemistry students from Year 12 and Year 11 at Carmel College participated in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Queensland Titration Competition 2025. The competition challenged students to showcase their precision and analytical skills as they worked meticulously to determine unknown concentrations using titration techniques. This event provided an excellent platform for young chemists to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting and foster a deeper appreciation for the field of chemistry.
Congratulations to Drew L from Year 12 for receiving a Distinction, Kaelyn H for earning a Credit, and Nathan W for achieving a Competent Certificate.

Year 12 Flow of Genetic Information Kits
Year 12 students used the Flow of Genetic Information Kits to deepen their understanding of molecular biology concepts. These kits provided an interactive and hands-on approach to learning, enabling students to explore processes such as DNA replication, transcription, and translation. By engaging with these practical tools, students were able to visualise and analyse the mechanisms of genetic information transfer, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Year 11 Microscopy Observation of Stomata
Year 11 students engaged in microscopy activities to observe stomata on different types of leaves. This hands-on experience allowed them to examine the structure and function of stomata, enhancing their understanding of plant biology and the role of stomata in gas exchange and transpiration. By comparing leaves, students gained insights into variations in stomatal patterns and their significance in different plant species.

Year 7 Developing Dichotomous Key
Year 7.7 students explored classification by learning to use dichotomous keys, creatively substituting food items for organisms. They crafted keys to classify chocolates, apple juice, Pringles, and other food items based on observable traits. This innovative approach made the concept relatable and engaging, showcasing how dichotomous keys can be applied to everyday items. The activity was met with enthusiasm, making the learning experience both practical and fun.

Curriculum Matters - Years 7-9
Student Diary
As always, I have enjoyed visiting our Years 7-9 classes to see how students are being engaged in their learning first-hand. This week has seen lots of learning coming to life with collaborative and practical experiences. Mrs Gough’s 7 HASS class were preparing for their mock referendum and in Mrs Anderson’s 7 English class I joined in a lively and impassioned debate.
Up in Eruditio, Mrs Hooper-Lees and Mrs Borg’s 7 Science classes were both able to give me great explanations of dichotomous keys and show off their recent learning as they practised with animals and foods! It was great to get involved with some of the decision-making about which characteristics to use to develop their keys.
Growth Mindset
During Assembly on Monday, I spoke to students about the importance of the mindset that they bring to school each day. Carol Dweck’s work on Growth Mindsets is enlightening and accessible – when we don’t believe we can develop our intelligence and skills, we avoid challenge and give up easily. In contrast, most successful students understand that practice makes progress and that challenge is exercise for the brain. I asked students to consider something that they had learned to do over a long period of time: times tables, dancing, driving, playing sports – there are so many things that they know they can do with practice, so it’s important that we help them apply this belief to learning at school too.
Mr Frank Turtle
Assistant Principal - Learning & Teaching 7-9
BPAC Eisteddfod
We’re excited to share the following results from the recent BPAC Eisteddfod.
High School Club Hip-Hop Section
Our Carmel College Hip-Hop Dance Troupe received a Highly Commended in a very competitive section of 22 schools. The adjudicator praised the performance for its energy and highlighted how much fun the students were clearly having on stage – it truly brought their routine to life.
High School Club Student Choreography Section (Senior)
We entered a reimagined group version of Year 12 student Adison H’s FA2 solo assessment. The performance placed 3rd in a diverse section that included a mix of genres and group sizes. This is an incredible achievement, and we’re so proud of Adi for her creativity and leadership with this moving contemporary piece.
High School Club Lyrical Section (Senior)
Our Senior Dance Troupe received a Very Highly Commended award in a challenging section, competing against some exceptionally strong schools. This marks the first time a Senior Troupe routine from Carmel has placed at an eisteddfod – a significant milestone! The students' teamwork and camaraderie were evident, and we believe these qualities truly elevated their performance.
Arts Co Dance Troupe – Jazz & Lyrical
Our Arts Co juniors took to the stage with heart, passion and courage in both the Jazz and Lyrical sections at the recent eisteddfod. While they didn’t place in an incredibly competitive field, we are beyond proud of each performer. The growth, commitment and energy they brought to their routines was unmatched and the experience marked an exciting beginning for what’s to come.

Mid Semester Performance
Thank you to all the staff and students involved in making the 2025 Mid Semester Performance such a success. This event is always a highlight for our Solo and small group Vocal/Instrumental students and their families. A big thank you to Mr Hayward, Mrs Harris and Mrs Lax for always supporting the Arts Co events.
What we offer – With most groups/ensembles coming at NO cost to our families
All Private Instrumental, Vocal, Dance, and Visual Art lessons are underway, and we are already seeing some real success stories. This year, we have the most Arts opportunities for Carmel College students that we have ever had, and our numbers are very high in all programs we offer. The Art staff are very excited for what 2025 holds for the Arts. If your student is enrolled in the Arts extra-curricular program, you will receive emails from their teacher regarding times and days of lessons and all other communication regularly. Please keep an eye on your emails for this. Please refer to the Arts Co weekly timetable below for more information.
If your child/ren would like to join an Arts Co Ensemble or take private instrumental, vocal, dance or visual art lessons, please fill out the Expression of Interest form and send to Julia.Spargo@carmelcollege.qld.edu.au. Students are welcome to joing all year round.
Arts Co-Curricular Program Leader
The Senior Dance Troupe would like to thank Miss Hailee Speck and Ms Ellie Kershaw for their tireless work and effort behind the scenes, as well as when teaching us. As dancers, we understand the complexities that come with choreographing and bringing ideas to life, and we are incredibly fortunate to have not just one, but two staff members who give up their time and support us with such love and compassion. A massive congratulations to them for helping us create a new memory for the college and bringing the Senior Dance Troupe to victory.
Lots of love,
Senior Dance Troupe

Representative Sport
There are a few trials open at the moment. Please ensure your child is looking through the notices to see what trials are open.
All student forms for school representative pathways must come through the Sports Office so that we can approve leave and get appropriate principal consent to trial. Thank-you to all students who have been checking notices and following this process. We congratulate the large number of students who have found success in these trials and competitions. We do not generally receive results from State or National Championships so if students are involved, can you please send these results and photos through to our sport@carmelcollege.qld.edu.au address so that we can share this with our community.
Please check your emails if your child was to attend a trial that was postponed. I have sent out a number of emails to the student and parents of those affected.
SECA Season 2 on the Horizon!
As we celebrate these achievements, we’re already looking ahead—Season 2 preparations are well underway!

Volleyball Schools Cup
The Year 9 Girls did an incredible job over the three-day carnival at Mt Warren Park!
The improvement from last year has been amazing. All the hard work they’ve put in during training truly paid off, and we achieved our best result yet. Last year, the team finished 6th on the ladder – this year, we brought home the bronze medal, finishing 3rd!
We faced some tough matches, but the girls dug deep and demonstrated resilience throughout the carnival.
A big thank you to Ms. Rodini and Ms. Hooper-Lees for coaching and supporting our volleyball girls.

Rugby League – Girls 9s NRL Gala Day
The Year 9-10 rugby league girls' team attended the Karen Murphy Cup in Wynnum on Tuesday, 10 June. The girls participated well in the 9 aside gala day. Our team was inexperienced, with most girls playing in their first or second gala day. Despite this, we won 2 out of 4 games. A highlight of the day was being able to mix with a couple of the Brisbane Broncos and Queensland State of Origin players. We look forward to more rugby league opportunities in Term 3 and 4 as we aim to give more girls the experience of playing rugby league.
