Curriculum Matters- Years 10-12

The Learning Dashboard – Semester One Reports

Our Semester One Reports are underway at the time of writing and we will be publishing these on Friday 27 June. This round of reporting precedes our final evening of Student-Parent-Teacher conferences on Tuesday 15 July. I encourage all parents and caregivers to talk with your children about their academic results and their Consistent Committed Learner Qualities. These reports are one piece of data that can help you and your children determine goals for Term 3 and identify areas of strength and barriers to learning. Our PC teachers will be ready to go in Term 3 to discuss, reflect, set goals and celebrate achievements in our PC Learn conversations.

As a reminder, parents and carers should be accessing ‘The Learning Dashboard’ rather than ‘Academic Reports’ as the Academic Reports section of our portal is where we have archived reports on the previous system.

Carmel College Assessment Policy

Over the last few weeks, I’ve met with numerous students and families to discuss all things Learning and Teaching in Year 10 – 12. It’s always wonderful to see families prioritising learning in our community and I appreciate the time and patience you’ve all offered me in this critical space. At Carmel we have explicit assessment procedures and guidelines for all of our learners. Our assessment policy outlines our philosophy around learning, teaching and assessing but also explains steps towards accessing special provisions for tasks, appropriate documentation needed to evidence the absence and next steps to catch-up on assessment. You can find this document on the parent portal or below:

Year 10 Subject Expo and SET Planning

Thank you to all Parents and Students for your attendance and engagement with our recent Subject and Careers Expo. It was great to have so many parents in attendance to learn about the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system and how we can individualise pathways for Carmel Students in Year 11 & 12.

You may be wondering what comes next and how students will now select their subjects for Year 11. I will be working closely with the 10s around the process of subject selection and providing every opportunity for them to seek knowledge and understanding around our suite of senior subjects and pathways. As parents, you will receive communication about the timelines of SET Planning and subject selection from our Pathways Leader Katie Coggins.

In Year 10, students will work with Carmel to design their own Senior Education and Training (SET) plan, selecting from a range of subjects or vocational pathways that were showcased last Tuesday. This process relies on parents and students to work with us to ensure we are setting achievable and motivating goals for your learners senior education journey. More information can be found here:

The SET Plan

As a parent or carer, there are many ways you can join this conversation so that come SET Planning time, you and your learner are well equipped to navigate these important decisions and discussions.

  1. Discuss the upcoming semester one report to determine strengths of your learner.
  2. Engage with our pathways hub to access up to date information, calendar items and short activities that will assist your learner in deciding their path forward. https://carmelcollegepathways.com/
  3. Visit QTAC to learn when specific institutions are hosting their University Open days.
  4. Engage in conversation with your learner to determine their strengths, passions and skills and encourage them to discover what career and pathway options might allow them to thrive with these things in mind. QUT and UQ have great supporting resources to assist you in having these conversations.

I recently sent out the QCAA published External Exam Timetable to all Year 12 parents, caregivers and students. As mentioned in that communication, a Carmel version with location and timing of exams will be published during Term 3. If you have not been able to access this information please follow the link below:

Term 3 will provide opportunities for our Year 12s to meet with their PC teachers for a second round of academic mentoring that will capture IA2s and 3s. Our Pathways Team will also be working with our Year 12s to discuss next steps post schooling and ensure that students have all of the tools to equip them for success beyond Carmel.

This will also see the first round of academic mentoring for our Year 11 students who will be reflecting with PC teachers on their Unit 1 results and steps to keep the momentum going. Year 11s have been incredibly reflective, and I’ve seen a number of subject changes come through that will support continued Year 11 success on their Senior Pathways. Well done, Year 11!

As always, we are available to answer any questions. Well done to all of our Senior Students for your hard work and commitment to learning across Term Two!
