QATSIF News

First Nations’ Students Creativity Shines

NAIDOC Week’s recent celebration around the theme of “Heal Country!” served as inspiration for two of Carmel College’s senior Arts students.

Talia Crabb and Tali Karklis both submitted impressive works into QATSIF’s (Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation annual Creative Arts Competition https://www.qatsif.org.au/

Tali, who was born and lives on Minjerribah, created a sculpture which represents his connection to country. The dot paintings symbolise him and his journey home, as he takes the long ride to and from the Island to attend school each day. Wrapping around one of the totems is a carpet snake, the spirit animal of Minjerribah.

A beautiful dance - “Mother Earth” – was chosen by Talia as her medium to raise awareness of the impact that increasing development has on society and Indigenous lands - view the performance at:

While we await official judging of the artworks by QATSIF, Carmel College is immensely proud of the efforts of both Talia and Tali.
